Set the number of loops of an animation

Adding an animated .GIF to a PowerPoint presentation can be an easy way to call attention to a point or to add a bit of life to a slide.  But animated .GIFs should be used with caution.  Nobody wants to view a slide with to many distractions.

Typically an animated GIF is set to loop over and over again forever and ever.  After a while this can get distracting for your audience if you spend any amount of time on a slide.  Wouldn’t it be great if the animation would just stop after a few moments?

With this in mind, we’ve added an new feature to our custom animation (GIF) creator in our animations section.  You can now set the number of times our animations loop before they stop.

Control the number of loops in an animated gif

Control the number of loops in an animated .GIF

By clicking the Number of Loops area in the customizer, you can set the animation to loop one to six times or choose to let if repeat indefinitely.

I particularly like choosing one or two loops for animations in my presentations as this give just enough time to spark the slide without becoming a distraction to my message.

For now, the set number of loops only works with .GIF images created with our customizer.

Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Great idea. I agree with you.. the animations can be distracting and lose their emphasis when the repeat indefinitely. Well done!

  • Truly and EXCELLENT and completely useful addition!

Seriously…this is why I continue to constantly recommend my customers and members to PresenterMedia.

  • I cannot get my animation to stop sepite reducing the number of loops, am I doing something wrong?

Hi Peter, After setting the number of loops, make sure you press the “Customize Animation” button in the lower right. This will rebuild your animation with the custom settings you have chosen. The Popular Download Size links in the upper right are pre-made animations and do not change. The new customized animation will appear in the customization window after about 20 seconds. Then use the download link in the customization window to download the new animation.

Let me know if you are still having problems.

I have never been able to get this feature to work and I have use the customize button all the time.

It would be a great feature and I hope there is something to fix this. I operate on a mac and use Safari.

        • Noel:

Thank you for your question. If you’re downloading animations for a Mac, then you’d be using Quicktime animations. This means they are controlled the same as videos, and you can set their loop to 1 instead of infinite through PowerPoint or Keynote for the Mac. Simply insert a Quicktime version of the animation (rather than GIF) and you can then modify the number of loops by using Video Format.

  • The page is a bit misleading as it is labeled “Theater Curtains Opening (non-looping)”.

I downloaded it and was surprised when the image looped over and over. Especially since the page advised: This animation is made to only loop one time.

So I guess the only way is to make it work as advertised is to use the Customize option and set the value to 1.

Perhaps either configure the stock animations to behave as advertised or change the page to reflect that you need to use the customize option?

    Cheers… Rick 🙂

  • Oops. Just noticed that this is a general area. The page in question is at:

I also had trouble making the animation loop only once. Maybe your answer to the people complaining about this should be something like this:

“After pressing the customize button, click the sign below the animation that reads “click here to download” and NOT one of the boxes of of the QUICK DOWNLOADS window at the right.

    • Felipe:
Thank you for your feedback. I will pass this along to our development team.
