Origin of Veterans Day

First, Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” and was celebrated on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I (according to history.com). Technically, the war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 (November 11th at 11:00am). This day commemorates veterans of all wars, not just World War I. Also, unlike Memorial Day, it celebrates those who are still alive as well as those who have died. Additionally, Veterans Day is celebrated beyond the United States. Great Britain, France, Australia, and Canada all celebrate the end of WWI and WWII on or around November 11th. Imagine that for a few minutes on November 11th, all around the world, people stop to remember those who serve their countries.
